HDTV transmission format conversion and migration path

چکیده

The development of high-definition television (HDTV) in the United States has recently resulted in the establishment of a national standard for its coding and transmission. This standard dictates, among other specifications, certain limitations on the allowable resolution of transmitted HDTV signals. There are many of these allowable formats, permitting scene-dependent processing and encoding; however, this introduces the need for conversion from the production format to the transmission format at the transmitter, and from the transmission format to the display format at the receiver. The adopted HDTV standard limits the resolution of television transmissions. In the future, having a path for migration to higher-resolution formats will keep television up-to-date with available technology. Requiring this migration path to be backward-compatible will be desirable so as to not render standard HDTV receivers obsolete. Since the original enhanced-resolution signal will often be available at the transmitter, it can be used to assist with the migration-path processing. Furthermore, performing computationally-intensive processing at the transmitter will reduce consumer costs and enable all receivers to benefit from the advanced signal processing. This thesis develops a backward-compatible migration-path structure which is based upon hierarchical block processing and motion-compensated prediction. We demonstrate that having access to the original video provides a critical advantage to determining enhancement information. Furthermore, we show that even with only a small increase in digital data requirement, the resulting picture-quality improvement is notable. Thesis Supervisor: Jae S. Enhanced 8-VSB transmission for North-American HDTV terrestrial broadcast

We present a new robust backward compatible 8-VSB transmission system for HDTV terrestrial broadcast. The new transmission system allows better reception of signals for portable, mobile and indoor receivers. In the proposed system a scalable fraction of the main service is used to transmit robustly encoded data. The robust service has at least a 6 dB fade margin advantage over the main service....

Digital Coding of High Quality TV

The study and development of systems for higher quality television has seen tremendous growth in recent years. This has been motivated by the fact that existing television systems give inadequate picture quality, especially for viewing on large screen displays. The main impairments which have been identified an~ scanning artifacts (line stucture visibility and flicker), limited resolution, and ...

High performance and cost effective memory architecture for an HDTV decoder LSI

This paper proposes an efficient memory mapping and a frame memory compression for an HDTV decoder LSI using Direct RambusTM DRAM (DRDRAM). DRDRAM is employed to achieve high memory bandwidth required for HDTV decoding at the minimum memory cost. Proposed memory mapping achieves high memory bandwidth sufficient for HDTV decoding even in the worst case and no costly line buffers are required in ...

Efficient Super-Resolution Up-Conversion Algorithm for HDTV

Video up-conversion takes significant place in various application areas. One of important application areas is standard-definition television (SDTV) video processing to get high-definition television content (HDTV) for broadcast. However, high-quality upconversion is a challenging task. Most practical implementations use spatial domain processing such as video frame interpolation for video up-...

Hd Production Codecs

The introduction of HDTV in Europe requires that broadcasters renew their production equipment. Whilst HDTV equipment in the past has targeted tape-based solutions, the user requirements for modern HDTV production workflows are file-based, non-linear and non-real-time – with shared access via networks and servers – and, last but not least, they have to be cost-effective. These requirements put ...
